Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary was opened in 1927 by a local, Claude Reid. At that time, believe it or not, wild koalas were being culled for the fur trade! Claude realised that something had to be done urgently to protect one of Australia’s most iconic species.
Mistakenly many people think that the Sanctuary's name comes from the ANZAC tradition, but the sanctuary is actually named after the huge hoop pine that still stands today at the ticket entrance. It is said that the single (“lone”) pine tree used to be a location marker for guests visiting the sanctuary by boat on the Brisbane River. The tree was originally planted in the late 1880s on what was then a cotton farm.
Allow at least 3- 4 hours to visit as the Sanctuary has an extensive collection of native animals, birds and reptiles. Koalas are scattered throughout the area and are easily viewed by visitors as most are in small enclosures. The keepers are happy to answer questions about out furry but “lazy” native friends.
In addition to the animal enclosures there are also several animal and bird performances for visitors including a raptor show and sheep dog trial. There’s also a large paddock you can enter to find a large herd of grey and other kangaroos; and several species of rock and other wallabies. You can buy food to feed the “roos” at the gift shop on entry.
There are several cafes on site with a good selection of hot and cold food; and at reasonable prices.
Comment:
While ticket prices might seem high please remember that the Sanctuary needs a minimum of 4 hours to see most of the exhibits.
In summary the Sanctuary is a worthwhile experience. I went there on a week day and the car park was full; a testament to the Sanctuary’s popularity.
